The city was founded in 1411 to serve as the capital of the Sultanate of Gujarat , by its namesake , Sultan Ahmed Shah . Under British rule , a military Cantonment was established and the city infrastructure was modernized and expanded . It was part of the Bombay Presidency during the British rules in India . Kankaria Lake , in the neighbourhood of Maninagar , is an artificial lake developed by Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the Sultan of Delhi , in 1451 A.D. The city is also called karnavati , a name for an older town that existed in the walled area . Ahmedabad remained the most important city in the Gujarat region . The city established itself as the home of a booming textile industry , which earned the nickname “The Manchester of India .” with the creation of the state of Gujarat in 1960 , Ahmedabad gained prominence as the political and commercial capital of the state . Once characterized by dusty roads and congested localities , the city is witnessing a major construction boom and population increase . A rising centre of education , information technology and scientific industries , Ahmedabad remains the cultural and commercial heart of Guajarat, and much of western India . Since 2000 , the city has been transformed through the construction of skyscrapers , shopping malls and multiplexes . Blackbuck National Park is a national park in india located at Velavadar in the Bhavnagar District of Gujarat state , India . Established in 1976 in the Bhal region of Saurashtra , the park is located around 42km from the district headquarters city of Bhavnagar . Hugging the coasts of the Gulf of Khambhat on the south , it is spread over an area of 34.08 km2 , which was primarily a “vidi” (grassland ) of the maharaja of the princely state of Bhavnagar for hunting the blackbucks with his famous hunting cheetahs . On the northern side , it is surrounded by wastelands and agriculture fields . The national park has been classified as 4B Gujarat –Rajwada biotic province of semi-arid bio-geographical Zone . Vadodara is situated on the banks of River Vishwamitri . The name of this river was derived from the name of a great saint vishwamitra . The mughal rule came to an End in year 1732 , when Maratha General pilaji Rao Gekwad intensified the Maratha campaigns in south Gujarat and carved out a kingdom for his lineage . Son & successor of pilaji Rao Gekwad – Damajirao , defeated the Mughal Armies and conquered Baroda state in year 1734 . Champaner was founded by Vanraj Chavda , the most prominent king of the Chavda Dynasty , in the 8 th century . He named it after his friend and general Champa , also known later as Champaraj . By the later 15 th century , the khichi Chauhan Rajputs held Pavagadh fort above the town of champaner . The young sultan of Gujarat , Mahmud Begada , deciding to attack champaner , started towords it with his army on 4 Dec 1482 . After defeating the champaner army , Mahmud captured captured the town and besieged pavagadh ,the well-known hill-fortress , above champaner where king jayasimha had taken refuge . He Captured the pavagadh fort on 21 November 1484 , after a siege of 20 months . He then spent 23 years rebuilding and embellishing champaner , which he renamed Muhammadabad , after which he moved the capital there from Ahmedabad . Sultan Begada also built a magnificient jama masjid in champaner , which ranks amongst the finest architecture on a high plinth , with a central dome , two minarets 30 meters in height , 172 pillars , seven mihrabs , and carved entrance gates with fine latticed windows called “Jalis” . In 1535 , after chasing away Bahadur Shah , Humayun led 300 Mughals to scale the fort on spikes driven into rock and stonework in a remote and unguarded part of the citadel built over a precipitous hillside on Pavagadh Hill .
